Principal's Update 10/27/23

ASVAB

The ASVAB is being offered to juniors and seniors on Wednesday, November 1st in the Media Center at 7:30AM. The ASVAB test is used by the military to determine qualifications for service. Bus overcrowding

The overcrowding of buses has become a major thorn in my side and a safety issue as students who are supposed to be walkers decide to jump on a bus and catch a ride. To alleviate this we have put a sticker on ID cards that identify the student as a bus student.

I’ve been announcing it for two weeks, and the drivers of the most crowded bus have as well, but kids are kids and don’t always listen. So if your student rides the bus and either does not have an ID or does not have the sticker on their ID card, have them come to the main office or they may be removed from an overcrowded bus. This sounds harsh, but it is the best way we can come up with to keep buses from having safety issues from overcrowding.

 

Halloween

Students are allowed to wear school-appropriate costumes to school on Halloween but cannot wear a mask. Make-up is fine.

School-appropriate means nothing that is too revealing, has profanity or drug or alcohol references, or is offensive.

 

Lockdown Drill

There will be a lockdown and evacuation drill at LHS on November 9th. The focus will be on teachers leading students out of the building and on the physical control measures around the building.

Reminders:

Security at Doyle Field

There have been concerns about student behavior at games at Doyle, so starting tomorrow there will be a few new rules in place for students:

·         Students should not bring backpacks to the game and all bags will be subject to search.

·         Students will not be allowed to leave the field and reenter.

·         All entry to the game has to be through the main gate.

After School Tutoring Center

LHS is again offering drop-in afterschool tutoring from 2:15 to 4:00 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Students can also be assigned to attend sessions if parents and teachers feel they need to catch up or get extra help.  Spanish and/or Portuguese interpreters will also be available on particular days.

Upward Bound

Leominster High School has partnered with the Fitchburg State University Upward Bound Math & Science Program to help prepare students for high school and college success! If having the opportunity to meet new students, attend college visits & field trips throughout the school year, live on-campus at Fitchburg State University for part of the summer, participate in community service, & other activities sounds interesting. Then, you should click the link or scan the QR Code to apply. The Upward Bound Math & Science Program is accepting new student applications from Fitchburg High School in 9th-11th grade.

Calling in a student absent

If your student is going to be absent please call the school at 978-534-7715. The absence line is option 1.

If you get an auto-call that your student is marked as absent and you think they are at school, don’t panic. Sometimes they accidentally get marked absent (especially with a sub) and sometimes they do cut class. Call the school and we will confirm they are not here.

Student Dismissals

If you need to dismiss your student you can simply send them to school with a note that they should bring to the office when they get to school. Your student will receive a pass to be dismissed and can just check out at the office when it is time for them to go. You won’t need to come into the school and it is much faster than coming in to dismiss your student.

Thanksgiving Game At Fenway Park

The LHS Football Team has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play the Thanksgiving Game at Fenway Park! The game will be played at 6:30 on November 22nd (that’s the night before Thanksgiving).

The district is providing a free ticket for any Leominster Public Schools student and will provide buses for Leominster High School students. Tickets must be reserved by November 3rd.

Ski and Snowboard Club News

Greetings LHS Students and Families from the Ski and Snowboard Club,

It's that time of year to get ready for ski and snowboard season and start thinking about SNOW. 

LHS ski and snowboard club will begin skiing weekly on January 8th, 2024 (only 73 days). We have a google classroom for all communications, the code is evwgpmu. There you'll find a calendar of our dates along with other information. The ski and snowboard club will provide transportation. The transportation survey  is on google classroom and it is a first come first serve basis. That needs to be completed by November 23rd. This will allow me to arrange all transportation and communicate the plan before Winter Recess because when we return, we head to the mountain! So exciting!
