LHS Update Nov 10

Principal's Update 11/9/23

No School 11/10

There will be no school on Friday November 10 (for my brothers and sisters in the armed forces for Veteran’s Day).

Accessing Student Grades

First Term Report Cards are out. Student grades are accessed through our online portal at https://www.leominsterps.org/

Select the Aspen Portal Link to log in. If you need to request an account there is a link on the Aspen Portal page just under the Login ID bar that says “Request an account.”

Lockdown Drill

We ended up postponing the drill we intended to do on November 9th and will likely hold it next week. We did some more training with the staff on evacuation planning and we want to rehearse it ASAP.

Toy Drive and Canned Goods Drive

LHS is participating in two events to benefit Leominster families.

Student Council is collecting canned goods for the food pantries. We complete against Fitchburg High to collect the most cans and we have not won in FIVE YEARS. We would really like to come out on top this year so send your student in with some canned goods next week.

The Mayor’s Youth Council is also collecting toys for the Leominster Police Department’s Fill a Cruiser Toy Drive. Send in unwrapped new toys to the school. The grade that brings in the most toys gets bonus points in the Winter Carnival in February.

Six LHS students will also be helping at a homeless Thanksgiving Meal next week because our students do a lot of amazing things.

Conferences

Parent teacher conferences will be Monday November 20th from 4 -8 and Tuesday November 21st from 12-4. Teachers will send out an email or send a form home with students to book conferences. There will be interpreters available that night for Spanish and Portuguese. If you require another language, please let me know ASAP.

Ski and Snowboard Club UPDATE

Greetings LHS Students and Families from the Ski and Snowboard Club. It's that time of year to get ready for ski and snowboard season and start thinking about SNOW.

LHS ski and snowboard club will begin skiing weekly on January 8th, 2024 (only 60 days). We have a google classroom for all communications, the code is evwgpmu. There you'll find a calendar of our dates along with other information.

The ski and snowboard club will provide transportation. The transportation survey  is on google classroom and it is a first come first serve basis. That needs to be completed by November 23rd. This will allow me to arrange all transportation and communicate the plan before Winter Recess because when we return, we head to the mountain! So exciting!

Please direct any and all questions to david.larson@leominsterschools.org and I look forward to getting on the slopes!

You can NOW purchase a pass with code LEHSC

You do not need to be a member of the LHS ski club to take advantage of the discount!!

Puerto Rico Trip

Hi families! If you missed the meeting about the 2025 Puerto Rico trip, the PowerPoint is attached to this email with all of the important information.

The tour is officially open for enrollment. The enrollment deadline is Wednesday, November 22nd. There were about 70 people interested in the meeting and we’ve got 20 spots available – we fully expect these spots to fill quickly, so get yours today!

I was also able to get a special early enrollment discount of $100 off for any families that enroll on or before November 10th, which will also qualify you for our 14-day risk free enrollment period.

For all details and how to enroll, please click here:  www.efexploreamerica.com/2716339XF

Our traveler support team can also help you enroll and answer any questions about tour details (payment plans, allergies and accommodations, etc.). Please call 1-888-333-9756 Monday – Friday before 3pm PST. You will need our group’s specific tour code: 2716339XF

We plan early for the following reasons:

1. The monthly payments will be as low as possible

2. There is limited space available

3.  We get a $100 early enrollment discount

4.   EF offers the EF Explorer Scholarship. Anyone who enrolls on tour is free to apply, but the scholarship is needs-based and not everyone will be awarded funds

5. Enrollment closes on Wednesday, November 22nd

I hope your student can join us on this once in a lifetime experience! Please call traveler support or let me know if you have any questions about the tour.

Best,

Andrea Grimes

Reminders:

Security at Doyle Field

There have been concerns about student behavior at games at Doyle, so starting tomorrow there will be a few new rules in place for students:

·         Students should not bring backpacks to the game and all bags will be subject to search.

·         Students will not be allowed to leave the field and reenter.

·         All entry to the game has to be through the main gate.

Bus overcrowding

The overcrowding of buses has become a major thorn in my side and a safety issue as students who are supposed to be walkers decide to jump on a bus and catch a ride. To alleviate this we have put a sticker on ID cards that identify the student as a bus student. If your student rides the bus and either does not have an ID or does not have the sticker on their ID card, have them come to the main office or they may be removed from an overcrowded bus.

After School Tutoring Center

LHS offers drop-in afterschool tutoring from 2:15 to 4:00 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Students can also be assigned to attend sessions if parents feel they need to catch up or get extra help. Spanish and/or Portuguese interpreters are available on particular days.

Scholarships

Google Classroom is now open with scholarships uploaded! Join the google classroom for scholarships. Check back often as new scholarships will be posted as they become available.

Calling in a student absent

If your student is going to be absent please call the school at 978-534-7715. The absence line is option 1.

If you get an auto-call that your student is marked as absent and you think they are at school, don’t panic. Sometimes they accidentally get marked absent (especially with a sub) and sometimes they do cut class. Call the school and we will confirm they are not here.

Student Dismissals

If you need to dismiss your student you can send them to school with a note to bring to the office when they get to school. Your student will receive a pass to be dismissed and can just check out at the office when it is time for them to go. You won’t need to come into the school and it’s much faster than coming in to dismiss your student.
